A Vital Bridge Between Singapore and Japanese Local Governments

Established in 1990 as an overseas office of a joint organization of Japanese local governments, the Japan Council of Local Authorities for International Relations, Singapore (J. CLAIR, Singapore) is dedicated to promoting the internationalization of local governments across Japan. Focusing on three core pillars: promoting tourism to Japan, supporting the international expansion of Japanese products, and fostering understanding of policies and systems related to foreign workers—we actively connect Japanese local governments with ASEAN countries, India, and Sri Lanka through international exchange, cooperation, and comprehensive research. The majority of our staff are seconded from various local governments across Japan, and I am proud to be serving here on secondment from the Tottori Prefectural Government.

Showcasing Regional Charm by Connecting Nature, Culture, and Cuisine

In Singapore, many Japanese local governments actively promote their unique regions. For Tottori Prefecture, we take a multifaceted approach—ranging from travel fairs and BtoB tourism events to market expansion and collaborative content creation with local creators. While bold claims like “Japan’s oldest sacred mountain, Mt. Daisen” or “Japan’s top-ranking crab catches” successfully capture attention, I believe true engagement goes deeper. Especially in Singapore, where many are seasoned travelers to Japan, it is essential to thoughtfully share the living stories behind the land—how a deep respect for nature and the purity of the water cycle shape its unique culture and cuisine. Through these tailored promotions, we bring the true charm of Japan’s diverse municipalities to the global stage.

A Translator of Values Connecting People and Communities

With shifting perspectives on foreign integration, internationalization in local Japan is at a major turning point, making our mission more essential than ever. Singapore has always fascinated me with its multicultural harmony and compassion, offering a gentle, livable atmosphere alongside high-tech efficiency. In contrast, Japan holds a unique heritage of nature worship and community support. Our primary role is to thoughtfully translate and bridge these values, connecting the unique strengths of both nations to foster deeper mutual understanding.

Running Through the Green City

From my after-work runs through the lush greenery to coaching children’s soccer on weekends, I’m living an incredibly healthy lifestyle—one that would have been hard to imagine back in Japan. I find that one of the true charms of Singaporean society is this collective mindset that values taking time for self-reflection through exercise.
