Establishing Our First Overseas Subsidiary in Singapore

Q：What kind of role did your company aim to fulfill when you started your journey in Singapore?

Nitori, which currently operates over 1,000 stores worldwide, made its retail debut in Singapore with the opening of its first store in March 2022. While Nitori’s first overseas store was opened in Taiwan, Singapore holds a special milestone: in terms of incorporating an overseas subsidiary, our Singapore entity established in 1989 was actually our very first in the world.

Preparing for our store opening was challenging, but we started with Nitori’s core corporate culture: “How do we make it happen?” Although tough realities became clearer as preparations progressed, we successfully opened our doors right on schedule.

Constantly Challenging the Status Quo

Q：What core beliefs, commitments, and passions do you value most in your daily operations?

Even when things are at their best, we never accept the idea of simply maintaining the status quo. In fact, we believe that what is going well right now is precisely what we must question. Rather than relying solely on past successes in Japan, discarding conventional wisdom and asking “How can we change our approach?” helps us spot and solve problems in our daily routines.

For instance, if we look at our best-selling product and ask whether we can make it even more affordable, we might open the door to enriching even more people’s lives. Tackling products precisely because they are selling well—that is the mindset we want to maintain.

Supporting Daily Life Through “More Than Expected”

Q：How do you envision growing alongside Singapore, and in what ways do you hope to keep contributing to the nation?

In the 4 years since our launch, we have expanded to 6 stores in Singapore. Nitori’s product development always starts from a simple question: “How can we solve everyday inconveniences?”—placing the utmost importance on the customer’s perspective. We deeply cherish our corporate vision, “To provide the richness of home living to people around the world,” and view our work as a meaningful way to contribute to society.

Originally founded in 1967 as “Nitori Furniture Store,” our company continues its global chain expansion today. As Singapore advances into its next stage of growth, we remain dedicated to supporting comfortable lifestyles through products that offer true “value beyond expectations.”

Q：What elements of Singapore’s culture or urban lifestyle do you find truly wonderful and inspiring?

Singapore offers a unique environment where people from diverse backgrounds coexist while respecting each other’s cultures. Combined with a rich culinary scene, safety, and cleanliness, it provides an environment that is very easy and comfortable for Japanese people to live in.
