Weaving Serendipity Alongside Our Partners ――Tomoyuki Nishida, (Deputy Chief Regional Officer, Asia & Oceania, Mitsubishi Corporation)

Evolving in Step with Singapore
Q:What was the greatest challenge or turning point that your organization faced while walking alongside Singapore’s development?
Mitsubishi Corporation established its local presence in Singapore in 1917, subsequently marking a fresh post-war restart in 1955. Ever since, we have walked hand-in-hand with this nation through every era of its transformation.
During Singapore’s early industrialization phase, we contributed through essential infrastructure development and the cultivation of local industries. As the economy matured, our presence transformed into a primary trading hub covering the wider Asia-Pacific region. In recent years, we have further expanded our role into a regional management that coordinates cross-border initiatives and drives new business development. As Singapore has continuously evolved into Asia’s hub, we too have continually adapted and reshaped our operations in tandem with the nation.
Connecting Regions Through Integrated Strengths
Q:What core values and philosophies have been passed down through the generations as part of your organization’s unchanging “DNA”?
Today, our Singapore Branch functions as the regional hub for the Asia-Pacific area, actively connecting our network of overseas offices and operating companies while driving new business development. What we cherish deeply is the relationship of trust we have cultivated over many years with governments and partners across various nations—standing firmly together through both good times and bad.
We firmly believe that while Mitsubishi Corporation cannot achieve great goals alone, joining forces with like-minded partners empowers us to take on major challenges. Exercising our comprehensive capabilities while connecting nations and industries to contribute to societal and industrial progress is the DNA passed down through generations at Mitsubishi Corporation.
Shaping the Future from Here
Q:What kind of footprint or legacy do you aim to leave over the next 10 to 20 years?
For at least the next 10 years, Asia will undoubtedly remain the central powerhouse of global economic growth. By fully leveraging Singapore’s unique strengths as a location where diverse resources converge and innovation is constantly generated, we aim to create new business.
Looking forward, I believe a “C to B” (Consumer-to-Business) approach—conceiving business strategies that originate directly from consumer and societal needs—will become increasingly important. By solving societal challenges across the Asia-Pacific region, we are dedicated to contributing to the sustainable growth of the region.
Singapore: Where Serendipity Blossoms
Q:What elements of Singapore’s culture or urban lifestyle do you find truly wonderful and inspiring?
The greatest charm of Singapore is its people. I am constantly impressed by how many individuals here possess refined international mindsets combined with exceptional personal integrity, all supported by an environment that approaches nation-building with a long-term vision.
As people and enterprises from across the world are drawn to this environment, gathering to inspire and challenge one another, unexpected and wonderful encounters—true serendipity—naturally blossom.
