Connecting Across a Quarter-Century: A Deep Bond with Singapore
Q：What was your first impression/shock when you arrived in Singapore?Was there a defining moment through your work where you started to see Singapore not just as a place, but as “your own story”?
My connection with Singapore traces back 25 years ago while I was working at the neighboring Kuala Lumpur Japanese School in Malaysia. During that period, I had the opportunity to visit Waseda Shibuya Senior High School in Singapore, and I remember being deeply moved by its exceptional educational environment.
When I officially relocated here in April 2025 to take up my current post, those vivid memories from a quarter-century ago came rushing back, bringing with them a profound sense of destiny—as if I had finally “come home.” Shortly after my arrival, I experienced another unforgettable moment on my very first MRT ride, when a local youth instantly and politely stood up to offer me their seat. Touching the genuine warmth of the people here transformed Singapore from just a location on a map into a deeply personal place where I feel a true sense of mission.
Spreading Wings from Singapore onto the Global Stage
Q：What is your ultimate focus or unique strength in your current activities?What are the core values and passion driving that dedication?
During my years teaching in Japan, I was profoundly inspired by organizing online cultural exchanges with several overseas educational institutions. That moving experience became the ultimate origin of my educational philosophy. To give back for that profound inspiration, our campus utilizes “learning that connects with the world” as our definitive strength, actively spearheading international online exchanges.
Leveraging the wonderfully diverse personal networks of our faculty, we have dynamically expanded our exchange programs with classrooms all over the globe since the 2025 school year. I want our students and staff to look far beyond Singapore and cast their eyes toward diverse nations worldwide. Through these grassroots interactions, it is my earnest hope that our school will continuously produce outstanding individuals who can confidently step onto the world stage and contribute globally.
From Grassroots Exchanges to a Brighter Shared Future
Q：How do you personally wish to contribute to and shape the relationship between Singapore and Japan moving forward?
By establishing reciprocal exchange programs where our junior high students visit local Singaporean schools and, in turn, welcome local students to our campus, we have successfully transitioned these encounters into deep, authentic friendships. Seeing the children enthusiastically sharing their respective cultures and customs with bright smiles is the very embodiment of a living bridge between our two nations.
My vital role is to ensure these marvelous interactions do not end as temporary events, but are instead preserved as sustainable assets for a shared future. From the frontlines of education, I will continue to pour my heart into ensuring that the youth of Singapore and Japan form deep, unbreakable bonds, growing into visionaries who will proudly carry the friendly diplomatic relations between our countries into the next era.
The Beautiful Harmony of Mutual Respect and Diversity
Q：What elements of Singapore’s culture or urban lifestyle do you find truly wonderful and inspiring?
What I cherish most about Singapore is its unique model of diversity and harmonious coexistence. It is a spectacular city where people from a multitude of ethnic backgrounds live side-by-side, fiercely honoring their own distinct cultures and traditions while naturally practicing a deep, mutual respect for one another. This extraordinarily tolerant, warm, and inclusive atmosphere is the true reason I have come to love this city so deeply.

Tsukasa Tomiyama
Principal, The Japanese School Singapore, Junior High School Campus
After serving at the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur and in other roles, he assumed his current position as Principal of the Junior High School Campus in April 2025.
In Japan, he served as Principal of Kayama Elementary School and Kuki Higashi Elementary School in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture. During his tenure at Kuki Higashi Elementary School, the school received designations such as a “Leading DX School” and an “Excellent School in Educational Informatics.”
