Q：What kind of role did your company aim to fulfill when you started your journey in Singapore?

Around 2004, when our company was first established, a major wave of petrochemical plants began operations across Southeast Asia, with Singapore as a pivotal regional hub.

To answer the evolving demands of these oil majors, our firm—which had previously operated primarily within the Far East—extended its fleet down to Southeast Asia. Establishing our operational base in Singapore, we embarked on a mission to serve as a marine pipeline connecting North and South Asia, dedicated to fulfilling our customers’ transport needs across the entire region.

Q：What is the underlying philosophy or commitment that drives your work every day?

Our parent company, Shokuyu Tanker Co., Ltd., celebrates its landmark 60th anniversary in Japan this exact year—sharing a beautiful parallel with the 60th anniversary of Singapore–Japan diplomatic relations (SJ60). In the maritime industry, long-term continuity relies entirely on deep mutual trust and absolute peace of mind.

As vessel owners and operators, our ability to deliver safe, secure, and reliable transportation for our clients—including oil majors, petrochemical manufacturers, and Japanese trading houses—has built a rock-solid foundation of trust over time. We refuse to rest on our laurels and will continue striving to meet and exceed client expectations every day.

Committing to Singapore Through Continuous Investment

Q：How do you envision growing alongside Singapore, and in what ways do you hope to keep contributing to the nation?

Working in close alignment with the Singapore Government and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), both of which provide exceptional support for the shipping industry, we have steadily expanded our business footprint.

Around the time we grandly celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2024, we took a major step forward by completing two newly constructed vessels registered under the Singapore flag—the very first Singapore-flagged ships in our company’s history. We are currently negotiating with shipyards for a third new vessel. Furthermore, we are accelerating our internal decarbonization initiatives while supporting our clients’ goals for net-zero carbon by 2050 through the specialized transport of biofuels, biofuel feedstocks, and methanol bunkering supplies.

An Exhilarating Nation Defined by Relentless Progress

Q：What elements of Singapore’s culture or urban lifestyle do you find truly wonderful and inspiring?

I have been posted to Singapore every 12 years—in 1992, 2004, and 2016. Observing the country at these regular points over the past 35 years, I am constantly filled with wonder and joy at its development and growth across so many fields.

Frequently getting an upset stomach after eating 200 yen kway teow at hawker stalls in the early 1990s is now a fond memory.
