60 Years in Singapore: Connecting People through Sound and Music— Yoshinori Sasaki, Yamaha Music (Asia) Pte. Ltd. Managing Director

Beginning in Singapore in 1966

Q:What kind of role did your company aim to fulfill when you started your journey in Singapore?

Yamaha Music (Asia) Pte. Ltd. was established in 1966 as a joint venture between Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. (currently Yamaha Corporation) and local partners (now a wholly owned subsidiary of Yamaha). Building on the music promotion initiatives we developed in Japan, we have expanded opportunities for people to engage with music through operating music schools and supporting concert band activities in public schools, growing alongside Singapore’s evolving musical culture.

Yamaha Corporation’s Current Initiatives

Q:What core beliefs, commitments, and passions do you value most in your daily operations?

We engage in a range of businesses centred on “sound” and “music”, including operating our directly managed stores and music schools, providing professional audio solutions for institutions, concert venues and commercial facilities, collaborating with domestic dealer networks, and re-exporting musical instruments and audio equipment to neighboring countries.

Furthermore, through music events and partnerships with educational institutions, we work to create opportunities for people of all ages, from children to adults, to experience music and discover the joy it brings.

What We Will Continue to Value

Q:How do you envision your future journey alongside Singapore, and in what ways do you wish to continue your contribution to the nation?

Even as the ways and opportunities to experience music undergo significant change, we place great value on opportunities for people to connect with one another through music and experience the richness of live acoustic sound.

In Yamaha Music School’s group lessons, through our original curriculum that incorporates ensemble playing and composition, students can experience the joy of playing in harmony with friends and the fun of creating music through trial and error. Furthermore, by providing opportunities to perform in public, we strive to help children develop a sense of accomplishment and confidence.

A Country That Continues to Create New Value

Q:What elements of Singapore’s culture or urban lifestyle do you find truly wonderful and inspiring?

Singapore is a city where new forms of value and services continue to emerge. In a rapidly changing business environment, we hope to leverage the experience and insights we have gained here to contribute to the future development of the Yamaha Group as a whole.
