Continuing to walk alongside the growth and development of Singapore — Atsushi Nakagawa, Obayashi Singapore Pte Ltd, Managing Director, COO

Growing in Tandem with Singapore’s Development
Q:How has Obayashi’s business and local organization evolved alongside Singapore’s development?
Obayashi has been developing its construction business in Singapore since 1965, moving forward in tandem with the birth of the nation. During this time, we have been honored to be involved in projects that became Singapore’s landmarks, such as the East Coast land reclamation works and the construction of the Changi Airport control tower.
While we operated as an office directly under our headquarters for a long period, we established a local subsidiary in 2014 to further enhance our contribution to local development. While our staff numbered 280 in 2014, our team has since grown to 800 alongside the nation’s development.
Engaging with Sincerity
Q:What core values and philosophies have been passed down through the generations as part of your organization’s unchanging “DNA”?
A wide range of stakeholders are involved in construction projects: clients, designers, joint venture partners, national staff, subcontractors, and site workers. We always make it a core point to respect every one of them. While a literal translation of our mindset would be “paying respect,” we feel that “engaging with sincerity” captures our true approach much better.
The Road Ahead
Q:What kind of footprint or legacy do you aim to leave over the next 10 to 20 years?
Over the roughly 20-year period from 2006 to the present, Singapore’s population has expanded from 4.4 million to over 6 million. We have played a proud part in developing the urban infrastructure required to accommodate this population growth.
Looking forward, we hope to continue contributing to social infrastructure development through our comprehensive technological capabilities, including deep underground space utilization and coastal area redevelopment projects.
The Ever-Evolving Skyline
Q:What elements of Singapore’s culture or urban lifestyle do you find truly wonderful and inspiring?
Singapore’s skyline is constantly undergoing transformation. This continuous evolution is precisely what captivates and charms everyone who visits the country.
