Q：What was the greatest challenge or turning point that your organization faced while walking alongside Singapore’s development?

Founded in 1915 alongside the early Japanese community in Singapore, the Association suspended its operations during World War II, only to be resiliently revitalized through the dedicated efforts of our predecessors in the post-war era. Today, we have evolved far beyond a traditional social club. We bear the responsibility of managing the essential pillars of our community—including The Japanese School Singapore, the Japanese Association Clinic, and the Japanese Cemetery Park—while actively cultivating deep roots within the Singaporean society. Our ongoing mission is to ensure our Clubhouse remains a welcoming sanctuary for our members, providing a safe, supportive, and enriching environment for their lives in Singapore.

A Century-Long DNA of Connection and Contribution

Q： What core values and philosophies have been passed down through the generations as part of your organization’s unchanging “DNA”?

Even after more than a century, the core DNA of our Association remains unchanged to serve as a vital hub for human connection and a committed contributor to Singaporean’s society. Centered around our Clubhouse—a safe haven where members support one another and deepen mutual bonds—we have expanded our initiatives across culture, lifestyle, and social contribution. Beyond our diverse volunteer activities, we also actively give back to the local community with the invaluable support of our corporate members. A proud testament to this commitment is our annual charity event, a tradition spanning more than 50 years, through which all proceeds are donated to local social welfare institutions and nursing homes.

Cherishing Connections, Creating Value for a New Era

Q：What kind of footprint or legacy do you aim to leave over the next 10 to 20 years?

Looking ahead, we are committed to continually creating new value that responds to the needs of a changing era. The foundation of this effort remains our steadfast stewardship of the Japanese School, the Japanese Association Clinic, and the Japanese Cemetery Park, alongside our deep-rooted engagement with the local community. To further enrich opportunities for interaction, our recent comprehensive Clubhouse renovation has refreshed our dining facilities and introduced a state-of-the-art 200-seat auditorium. We are also continuously enhancing the services and facilities of our library and clinic to ensure a seamless and user-friendly experience. By preserving the irreplaceable value of human connection, we hope to pass on to the next generation a supportive, resilient and vibrant Japanese Association.

Q：What elements of Singapore’s culture or urban lifestyle do you find truly wonderful and inspiring?

What I find truly remarkable about Singapore is its deeply ingrained culture of mutual respect, where people from diverse backgrounds come together to inspire and uplift one another. I am also deeply impressed by the city’s rich and accessible cultural landscape—from the museums and art galleries to the abundance of vibrant community events that people can easily enjoy in their daily lives. It is an environment that masterfully balances its position as global business hub with an exceptional quality of life.
